About Age UK Manchester
Our current Befriending Project for the over 60’s provides support for adults who are at risk of social isolation and loneliness. The service is for 18 week’s per service user for 1 hour per week. Our service offers one-to-one companionship each week to individuals who may be house-bound, have limited or no family, are isolated and lonely. Our aim is to support individuals through our weekly visits with a hope that towards the end of the 18 weeks we are able to assist them to access other community groups or services. Thus alleviating the long term impact of loneliness and isolation.
Service Eligibility
Please see below the eligibility criteria for referrals into the Age UK Manchester Befriending Service:
· Age 60 and above
· Manchester City Council postcode
· Live alone
· Social Isolation – Minimal or no outside interactions
· Loneliness and isolation apparent

Information for Volunteers
What’s involved?
Help older people feel less lonely by providing a listening ear, engaging them in conversation and to chat to them with a keen interest, have experience of Older people’s issues. Be willing to find out about local services and how to support individuals to use them. Ability to provide non-judgemental support and encouragement to people who struggle with memory or illness. Are able to respect confidentiality even in difficult situation, are honest, reliable, committed with a flexible approach to meet clients’ needs and a full/clean driving licence. Offering a minimum of 3 hours per week.
