About Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council

The befriending service is provided by Neath PortTalbot Council. Our volunteer befrienders are there to form successful, trusting partnerships with people who are very lonely and have very little, or no meaningful social contact with other people.  A befriender can provide some companionship or help you feel more confident about forming your own relationships in the future.  The service is there for people who are 25 years old and over, living in Neath Port Talbot, who are significantly affected by loneliness and have very little or no contact with others.  A befriender is not a replacement for any type of care or health service. Volunteers are not able to administer medication or provide any personal care. They are only there in the capacity of a companion.

Wales, SA11 3QZ

Service Eligibility

People who are experiencing significant social isolation. This can be a result of personal circumstances or medical conditions. There are no exclusions per say but a person would need to be both willing and able to develop a meaningful companionship with a volunteer befriender. In cases where people may have needs for more formal care, these would need to be wull managed by appropriate services. Befrienders can provide supoort for individuals who would otherwise not be able to have any meaningful social contact, and can also support people who might need encouragement to make their own social connections.  Referrals can be made be emailing adultpreventionreferrals@npt.gov.uk

Information for Volunteers

Volunteer befrienders are matched with a person in the community to provide much needed companionship and the opportunity for people who are isolated to get out and about in the local area. Matches are made taking into account location, hobbies, interests and personality.  All our volunteers will need to undertake a DBS check. Befrienders might spend some time with someone in their home for a cup of tea and a chat, or do things in the community together like going shopping or visiting a park. The role of a befriender is very flexible.  We generally ask for a minimum of an hour a week.  We will ensure that as a volunteer you will be supported by your oordinator on every step of your journey with us. You will be required to undertake basic training including safeguarding, boundaries and equality & diversity. You will receive a certificate for each training course attended.
