About Share Community

Launched during lockdown to help relieve isolation, our volunteer befrienders visit people near their homes to go for a walk, a bike ride, a coffee, do some shopping or just have a chat. Befrienders are carefully matched to those with similar interests, offering support and friendship. How does befriending help? It encourages communication, helping people improve their social skills and feel more self-confident. It motivates people to get more exercise by getting out in the fresh air. People feel less lonely, they make friends and have someone trusted to talk to.

Service Eligibility

The service is available to anyone who attends Share.  Activities are chosen by student members and meetings are typically once a week for 1-2 hours.

Information for Volunteers

Our befrienders offer support to adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.  They may also have a physical or sensory disability, and mental health needs.  Befrienders will meet up with our students outside their homes to go out locally together to do activities chosen together.  This could be going for a walk, going for a coffee, seeing a film etc…

You’ll give people regular valuable contact with someone outside their immediate support bubble, helping them feel less alone.  You’ll support them to maintain positive mental health and encourage communication on meaningful topics or shared interests, helping to promote positive outlooks and raised confidence.

We’d like our befrienders to commit to one visit per week or two, spending up to two hours together.  In order to give our students some stability, we’re hoping to find volunteers who can commit for at least six months.
