Volunteering Matters
North Lanarkshire Befriending ProjectAbout Volunteering Matters
Volunteering Matters are a national volunteering charity. Our North Lanarkshire Befriending Project supports Young Carers aged 8-18. Befrienders provide 1:1 support to children and young people, meeting them once a week or fortnight. This could be after school, in the evening or at weekends, depending on volunteer availability. The role of a Befriender is to build a positive and trusting relationship with a young person and to be a positive role model. Befrienders and young people take part in outings, or activities. These give young people the opportunity of timeout from their caring responsibilities. Young people benefit from an adult befriender they can talk to and trust as well as providing them with a reason to get out of the house. The project helps young people with social skills, self-esteem, school attendance/performance, resilience, personal safety, health, and relationships.
