Purpose of the course

Strengthen safety, confidence, and good practice across your befriending service with this essential, practical training on Risk Management. Designed for coordinators, managers, and anyone responsible for volunteer or service‑user wellbeing, this course provides a clear, engaging introduction to identifying, assessing, and responding to risk within community-based befriending projects.

Through real case studies, interactive discussion, and step‑by‑step guidance, you’ll explore the wide range of risks facing charities today, financial, operational, technological, social and the environment. Learn how to turn risk management into a proactive, confidence‑building tool rather than a barrier to creativity.

By the end of the training, participants can feel equipped to manage risk with clarity and assurance, protecting volunteers, safeguarding service users, and strengthening your organisation’s resilience and reputation. Learning objectives include

To assess the purpose of risk management
To define risk(s) facing your organisation
To discuss common risks in befriending and other social support models
To formulate the best methods to respond to risk
To construct an effective risk policy and risk assessment procedure
To assess your understanding of important legislation

Resources and additional support

Any attendee will have access to the Risk Management delegate pack, which includes resources for support and guidance. This includes members’ examples of good practice in relevant risk management policies and procedures, Befriending Networks templates, Relevant legislation and Wellbeing Protection materials. Attendees will also be invited to submit their risk policy, risk assessment form, or risk procedure for free consultation and feedback. Recommendations for improvement will be provided as applicable.

Certificate of completion

All participants of Vital Skills have the opportunity to earn a certificate of attendance by completing the summative assessment to evidence their learning in the course.

Cancellation Policy

Please check your diary before committing to any dates. We understand that your circumstances may require a change of training dates. If you need to cancel or defer your order:

Up to 48 hours before the course begins: your order will be refunded, subject to a £15 administration fee. Alternatively, you can defer your order to the next occurrence of the same course.
Within 48 hours of the course beginning, including non-attendance: your order is non-refundable and cannot be deferred.

Please note that all courses operate with a minimum number of delegates. If this number is not obtained, we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule the event date. Your event facilitator will contact you to discuss options. In such cases where we cannot fulfil your order, a full refund will be given.
