Listen
Volunteer Centre Greenwich help local people find volunteering opportunities though online and face-to-face signposting services. Their Emotional Support and Wellbeing Project provides support to the residents of Greenwich who are lonely or isolated.
Their case study tells the story of Avril, who discovered a new sense of connection through group activities and social gatherings.
Weekly moments of joy
Avril, a resident in her mid-seventies, initially faced significant challenges with loneliness and isolation. Before joining Volunteer Centre Greenwich befriending service, she spent much of her time at home alone, disconnected from the community and lacking opportunities for social engagement. The isolation had gradually impacted her confidence, leaving her reluctant to participate in outside activities or seek out new experiences.
Avril joined the befriending service two months ago and soon became actively involved in the various activities offered. From regular social gatherings and group outings to skills workshops, she made a dedicated effort to participate fully. This engagement brought structure and purpose to her routine, creating a sense of anticipation and joy in her weekly schedule. Avril found a supportive community through these activities where she felt seen, heard, and valued.
A new support network
Since joining the program, Avril’s mental and emotional well-being has significantly improved. Her feelings of loneliness have lessened, and she has developed meaningful connections with both volunteers and other participants. By engaging regularly in activities that stimulate and engage, Avril has not only found companionship but has also regained her self-confidence. She now feels more capable and willing to engage with additional services, understanding that she has a support network to rely on.
“My life has become more meaningful and interesting meeting all the lovely people that I have met through Volunteer Centre Greenwich”
Giving back
Inspired by the positive impact the Volunteer Centre has had on her life, Avril recently decided to give back by becoming a volunteer herself. She now actively supports new participants joining the befriending service, offering a friendly and relatable presence for those who, like her, are struggling with feelings of isolation. Her unique perspective as both a former recipient and now a volunteer allows her to provide authentic empathy and guidance to others.
Avril’s journey has had a big impact on the Volunteer Centre Greenwich team too:
“Having seen Avril at the beginning and how she is now makes me happy about the transformation she has made”
