Hands
Helping Neighbours in Need
About Hands
Hands is a local neighbourhood charity and our aim is to enhance quality of life and help maintain cherished independence for those in need in Twickenham and St Margarets. With our local volunteers, we act as good neighbours, help with small tasks and provide friendly support and companionship to those in need, especially older people and those who are isolated or housebound.London Road, Twickenham, England, TW1 3QS
Service Eligibility
We aim to positively impact the wellbeing of socially isolated and lonely people in Twickenham and St Margarets by offering safe companionship and support.
We accept referrals from family members, friends, neighbours, social workers, community groups and clients themselves.
Information for Volunteers
We accept volunteer applications from people located in the local area.
To become a befriender with Hands, we will first invite you in for an informal interview to make sure we are the right fit for you, and vice versa. If successful, you will then undertake a DBS check and Level 2 Safeguarding Training.
Befriending Training will then be offered (supplied by the Befriending Network) – it is a comprehensive 3 hour course covering areas such as communication skills, handling difficult conversations, boundaries, our role and the role of support sessions.
We expect Befriending volunteers to be able to commit to an hour with their Befriendee weekly or fortnightly. There are occasional exceptions to this, but this is taken on a case by case basis.
We expect our Befrienders to be compassionate, empathetic, and a patient listener who builds trust through reliability and confidentiality.
