Befrienders Highland – #BefriendingIs helping friends while boosting my confidence
21st October 2022
During #BefriendingWeek, let’s hear what #BefriendingIs from Befrienders Highland:
Alaine Macdonald
10 Year Award
Alaine was visiting a charity fair and looking at leaflets on the Befrienders Highland stall, when a lady said to her “You look like a befriender!” She gave her name and contact details straight away.
“I liked the idea of being matched with someone who needed companionship. I felt it was something I would enjoy, and the responsibility would boost my confidence.”
“Befriending gives me something different to look forward to each week.”
“I enjoy exploring and visiting places my friends would not go on their own. We saw a film and went to the ballet at Eden Court, and we have joined Malcolm’s walking group. I did the walk leader training and have led the walk when Malcolm has not been able to do it.”
“My second and third friends were both able to say they no longer needed me, which was what I expected to happen. I am still in touch with one of them.
My present friend is more willing to try new things than she was. She is more confident with other people and has made new friends in the Befrienders Walking Group.”
