Jonathan’s Story – People Know How
2nd October 2019
Jonathan has been volunteering with People Know How since May 2019 and has supported numerous projects during this time. Beginning as a befriender in our Positive Transitions Service, Jonathan has most recently been heavily involved in our Science Club project, which lets children exercise their curiosity and learn about the world through science.
After finishing his degree, Jonathan had some spare time on his hands and a passion for helping people in his local area. Having had a keen interest in science at school, he was interested in sharing this enthusiasm with local children whilst also helping them in the transition from primary school to high school.
Thanks to Jonathan, Science Club has developed massively, expanding to include weekly workshops in schools across Edinburgh and a summer programme. Activities include making homemade rockets, lava lamps, musical instruments and even controlled explosions!
As well as this, Jonathan has helped support group outings on a local canal boat as part of our All Aboard project. This involves supervising school groups, running environmental projects and occasionally a shot at steering!
“I have improved my confidence, especially by trying things I haven’t done before… It’s been really good trying new things and pushing the envelope a bit in terms of what I thought I’d be comfortable with”
