Mencap – Charlotte: #BefriendingIs making me feel good!

Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.

 

Charlotte and Vicky were matched as a Gig Buddies pair just a few months before lockdown. They had only managed to meet a few times, enjoying a coffee meeting, a pizza at the pub and attending a Gig Buddies bowling social. They love a meal out and any opportunity for a chat with their next meeting was planned to be at the Brick Box bar.

Instead they’ve been keeping in touch over weekly video calls, catching up to see how each other is doing.

Both Charlotte and Vicky have loved joining Virtual Socials with other gig buddies and their shared love of films has meant they’ve particularly enjoyed taking part in film and musical quizzes.

“I’ve enjoyed it all and love seeing everyone. Even though we can’t meet up, we can still see each other on Zoom. It’s made me do more, do different things and makes me feel good -I’m doing to something with my life!

If didn’t do Gig Buddies I wouldn’t have any friends but I have a lovely friend in Vicky! I’d recommend it to my friends, the more the merrier, go for it! You get to meet different people and gets you out. Vicky is really fun. I love having Vicky around, it’s the best!”

“The Gig Buddies staff are great! Everyone is friendly, professional and reliable. I love hanging out with everyone. It’s been nice to get to know Bradford as I’m not from here originally and learn loads of new skills. I like the fact we’re a small family and if we need any help or support we can get in touch. It’s nice to engage with local organisations and helping the community. It makes me happy to make Charlotte’s day and excited to organise our meet ups and socials”
