About Dundee Volunteer and Voluntary Action

Community Companion befrienders support people who are lonely or socially isolated.  We match volunteers to individuals based on matching criteria such as hobbies, interests and life experiences.

The Community Companion visits the person for an hour or two each week.  The time could be spent having a chat, going for a walk, going for a coffee or to a social activity, it is up to the two of you how you would like to spend the time.  This type of befriending focuses more creating a friendship rather than reliance.

We also offer weekly social cafes.  These are held in local care homes and sheltered complexes and allow small groups of people to come together and spend some quality time with one another over a cup of coffee or an activity.  The cafes last for an hour to an hour and a half and are situated throughout Dundee.

Information for Volunteers

Community Companion befrienders support people who are lonely or socially isolated.  We match volunteers to individuals based on matching criteria such as hobbies, interests and life experiences.  The Community Companion visits the person for an hour or two each week.  Volunteers are asked to give between 1 and 2 hours a week on a day and time most suitable to them.  The project is very flexible and volunteers can give their time during the day, in the evening or at weekends.  We try to accommodate everyone and base the project around the needs of those referred and volunteers.  The time could be spent having a chat, going for a walk, going for a coffee or to a social activity, it is up to the two of you how you would like to spend the time.  This type of befriending focuses more creating a friendship rather than reliance.  We also offer volunteer opportunities for our weekly social cafes.
