About Epilepsy Action

Our befriending service provides a regular weekly chat by phone or video to anyone who is feeling lonely, isolated or just needs someone to talk to.  We’ll connect you to a volunteer who will offer you the chance to:

  • Have a chat about what’s going on in your life
  • Build a connection with someone around shared interests
  • Gain confidence and self worth.

After registering your interest we will get in touch to make sure the service is right for you.  When we match you to a volunteer, calls will take place at a time that works for both of you.  Usually calls last around half an hour for up to 12 weeks.  You could be living with epilepsy yourself or it could be a family member or someone you care for.

Information for Volunteers

Our befriending volunteers provide a friendly, listening ear to people affected by epilepsy who may feel lonely or socially isolated.  If you are a good listener, patient and understanding, then this is the role for you.

You’ll be matched with someone affected by epilepsy who is feeling lonely, isolated or just wants someone to talk to.  Your regular 30- minute conversations online or by phone can make a huge difference in someone’s life.  You’ll be providing companionship, building their self-confidence and gently encouraging them to make connections in their community.

You’ll have regular check-ins with your volunteer supervisor.  There’s training and ongoing support and if you want to connect with other volunteers, you’ll also be able to join regular meet-ups where you can chat to other befriending volunteers, share your experiences and learn from each other.
