Information for Volunteers
We offer a flexible home-study training package, so you can get started at your own pace. Once trained, you’ll be matched with an older person (55+) living at home who’s feeling lonely or socially isolated. Your regular visits—whether weekly or fortnightly—can truly brighten their week.
Each visit lasts around 1–2 hours and is shaped by what your befriendee enjoys. You might share stories over a cuppa, do a crossword together, or play a game. Or you could head out to a local café, enjoy a scenic walk, run errands, or accompany them to appointments. It’s all about companionship and connection.
Many older people describe their befriending visits as the highlight of their week—and volunteers often say they get just as much out of it too!
Key qualities we look for in a befriender:
• Friendly and reliable
• A good listener
• Respectful and patient
• Able to commit to regular visits
