About Pillar of Hope
Pillar of Hope’s befriending services are designed to be a compassionate and culturally sensitive support system for individuals facing loneliness, and social isolation no matter their ethnicity or beliefs, it’s for adults who need it, including those from BAME communities in Aberdeen and the environs. We match participants with trained volunteers who genuinely understand their cultural backgrounds, ensuring each individual feels respected and valued. Through regular friendly 1 to 1 conversations, emotional support, and practical guidance, we help ease loneliness and build confidence, restore hope, foster social connection, and empower individuals to take steps toward a brighter, more connected future.

Service Eligibility
Pillar of Hope Befriending service is open to supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds who face loneliness and or social isolation, particularly from disadvantaged communities.
Age: Adults age 18 and above, with no upper age limit.
The service is available for people experiencing or at the edge of experiencing loneliness or social isolation due to single or many factors such as physical, emotional, or cultural barriers.
Our service primarily covers Aberdeen and the surrounding areas.
The service may not be suitable for individuals with severe mental health crises or those requiring specialised medical or psychiatric care, as we focus on social support rather than clinical support.
Information for Volunteers
How to Apply: Simply fill out our online application form on our website or contact us directly via phone or email. We will invite you for an informal discussion about the role, followed by a background check and training sessions
Volunteer Role: Provision of emotional support and companionship to our service users. Use of phone calls, in-person visits, or virtual calls, offering a listening ear and helping them feel more connected to their community.
We are requesting a minimum commitment of 1-2 hours weekly with flexibility depending on your availability and the needs of the person you are matched with.
Key Qualities: Empathy and non-judgemental attitude; effective communication skills, patience and reliability, and respect for cultural diversity.
Volunteers will be provided with the necessary training to ensure they feel confident in their roles.
