Southwark Irish Pensioners Project
About Southwark Irish Pensioners Project
At the Southwark Irish Pensioners Project our befriending service offers friendly support to older Irish people through regular visits or a weekly phone call from our volunteers. Whether it’s a chat over a cup of tea at home or a voice on the line, we’re here to help reduce loneliness and build connections. It’s all about companionship, conversation, and showing our aging Irish community that someone cares.
We simply couldn’t do what we do without our amazing volunteer befrienders!

Service Eligibility
Our befriending service is available to Irish pensioners aged 55 and over who may be experiencing loneliness or social isolation. We also support individuals living in south London, mostly in Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham who would benefit from regular social contact.
While our service is not suitable for those requiring specialist mental health support or personal care, we welcome referrals for people receptive to friendly conversation and companionship.
Referrals can be made by family members, friends, carers, GPs, or other professionals by contacting Deirdre or Catriona directly at Southwark Irish Pensioners Project –
Phone: 020 7237 5841 / 0800 1577783
Email: Volunteers@irishinlondon.org
Each referral is reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure we can provide the most appropriate support.
Information for Volunteers
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer befriender, you can email Deirdre or Catriona our volunteer organisers – volunteers@irishinlondon.org, or get in touch with us on 020 7237 5841 / 0800 1577783 for more information.
All our volunteers will be given training and ongoing support, and an enhanced DBS check will be required.
If you are enthusiastic and reliable and enjoy making a positive difference in someone’s life, this role is for you. As a befriender you’ll be matched with an older person and commit to either visiting them at home or giving them a phone call once a week.
Each visit and every phone call makes a real difference, and we’re so grateful for each and every one of them.
