The Forget Me Notes Project

About The Forget Me Notes Project

We are an Edinburgh-based charity, built on dementia-friendly values, that uses music to build relationship and combat isolation. We run several community singing groups across the city that are open to all; we also work in care settings and we have a Zoom choir. In addition to this, volunteers offer fortnightly visits to individuals in their own home or care home who are living with dementia when it is more difficult to be out and about. We know that everyone has a story to tell and we believe in the power of music to enable support, joy and self-expression; music helps us to tell these stories and reminisce together.

Service Eligibility

Our Volunteer Project offers home visits to people living in the City of Edinburgh who can no longer easily access community events. Our Referral From is available from our Volunteer Coordinator. We accept referrals from Link Workers or other professionals, Family Members or Carers. We give priority to those who have limited social connections, and we will let you know whether we have availability on our wiating list. Sessions are a mixture of singing, playing or listening to music together and sharing memories. The overall aim of each session is to increase well-being; to be both therapeutic and fun.

Unfortunately we are not able to take referrals for this volunteer service for people in the later stages of dementia, for example, when someone has become non-verbal. However we may be able to refer or sign post to a trained Music Therapist and so we welcome your enquiry.

Information for Volunteers

Our volunteers are warm, friendly and reliable people who have the kindness and confidence to work one-to-one with those affected by dementia. Bring your enthusiasm and people-skills, and we’ll give you person-centred training and support to deliver Music Memory sessions. Volunteers are linked with an individual who is living with dementia for fortnightly visits. There is no requirement to play an instrument or even to sing in tune, just a belief in the value of music to share lives through memories and songs.
