About We Are Listening
We Are Listening is a new charity (Reg. No. 1206228), created to provide an alternative befriending service for elderly, isolated and vulnerable older adults (55+) who may feel socially excluded. Our mission is to help relieve their isolation and to assist their integration back in to society by providing a telephone and/or correspondence based befriending service. We have recently gained sufficient funding to recruit our first employee who will act as Programme Coordinator and expand our operation.
We are taking a different, novel approach to volunteer recruitment by building relationships with higher education establishments who have mature students wishing to gain work experience as part of their course (such as Health and Social Care).

Service Eligibility
Most of our clients are elderly people over the age of 65 who need support to boost their wellbeing. We have no limit on the period over which a volunteer and client are matched as this will depend entirely on their personal circumstances and our geographic coverage is across the UK.
Our referrals for clients can come from a range of organisations – NHS agencies (Social Prescribers), Local Authority Social Services, GP Practices, Care Homes and Housing Associations.
You can apply to access our services through our website or by telephone.
Information for Volunteers
Volunteer applications can be made via our website https://www.wearelistening.online or via telephone contact 07913963540
Volunteers need a DBS check and then we provide online training and match interests etc. to an elderly client.
Befriending volunteers commit to a weekly telephone conversation or a letter. There is a requirement to provide feedback on wellbeing and any issues which may be picked up and can be acted upon by We Are Listening.
The qualities we look for are an enthusiastic personality being able to establish a caring relationship with clients, getting them to show interest in the outside world, try new things and have a sense of belonging.
