About West Lothian Youth Action Project

Befriending service for young people aged 10-21 with things going on in their lives which affect mental health/wellbeing.  The service supports young people with issues around confidence & self-esteem & the things which impact these in young people.  A time-limited service is offered, and prioritised for those who do not have other supports.  Befriending can be traditional face-to-face, Remote via phone, text, video calling, or a mixture of both – hybrid.

Service Eligibility

  • Young person aged 10 -21
  • Living in West Lothian
  • Experiencing issues affecting mental health/well-being
  • Isolated/not involved in any social or recreational activities
  • Unable to provide outing support for young people with physical disabilities who require specialised care or personal care (remote support could be explored).
  • Young people who have no support are prioritised over those who have other supports in place.

Information for Volunteers

Befrienders support young people aged 10-21, resident in West Lothian who experience issues affecting their mental health/wellbeing.

Befrienders provide support and encouragement and aim to reduce social isolation by engaging with their matched young person in recreational and social activities.  Some young people receive their befriending remotely which consists of a video call, telephone call or messaging session.

Commitment required is weekly or fortnightly for approximately 2-3 hours for face-to-face sessions, or up to approximately 1 hour for remote sessions.

Comprehensive training is provided, and continuous support throughout volunteering journeys.  Personal development is supported and relevant expenses are covered.
