Sightline – #BefriendingIs a call each week I look forward to
21st October 2022
During #BefriendingWeek, let’s hear what #BefriendingIs from Sightline:
Sightline – Dana’s Story
I have age related macular degeneration (AMD) and am now at the point where I can’t read much at all. I used to love doing cross words and reading magazines but those days are gone now. I do have a good family and great neighbours so feel lucky in that respect. My son will take me for my weekly food shop; I couldn’t do it without him as I can no longer read the labels on packages now.
I’ve always been a sociable person and had a good circle of friends. Unfortunately, since the pandemic most of my friends have either passed away or moved into residential care. I really miss their company; we used to go on holidays together and so much more.
My optician recommended I contact Sightline; she knew I was a chatty person and could benefit from a call each week with someone who can offer friendship and support. Boy, am I glad I did! I just love my calls with Karen; she’s like a daughter to me. I always look forward to our Wednesday evening call.
We talk about our families, my time growing up in the War and lots of other things; we never seem to run out of things to chat about. My son is always telling me jokes and I remember some and always like to share one with Karen on our weekly call. She’s so easy to talk to, the conversations are no effort at all; I know I can tell her anything.
She always tells me she’ll be here for me for as long as I need her; it means so much for me to have the calls with her; she’s such a genuine person. I’d be upset if our calls didn’t happen; I’d miss her a lot. She gets 10 gold stars from me!
