Good Practice: Bereavement in Befriending

Absolutely brilliant workshop. It was facilitated wonderfully and the whole thing felt so smooth. The trainer is clearly a professional, and her warmth and personable nature encouraged all attendees to open up and share. The practical strategies and tips when either a service user passes, or a volunteer is supporting a bereaved service user was the most helpful part, and I will be bringing those ideas into our service. – Previous Participant.

Purpose of Course

Developed in response to requests from Befriending Networks members, this training equips attendees with practical skills and knowledge while modelling facilitation using the training toolkit provided to all participants. It supports staff and volunteers in helping others through loss (including bereavement, loss of independence, and loss of mobility) and is suitable for all ages and services, not just older people’s projects.

Resources and Additional Support

This course offers an interactive learning experience with activities, discussion, and peer learning, plus a Bereavement in Befriending delegate pack packed with practical resources for organisations and stakeholders. Due to the breadth of materials, attendees will also be offered a free, optional one-hour follow-up session for questions and further discussion.

  • Bereavement Training Toolkit. An 81-page resource filled with information and activities to help you design support or training on Bereavement within your befriending service.
  • Being an end-of-life befriender.
  • Supporting positive endings through a bereavement.
  • The art of listening with boundaries.
  • Signposting to supportive resources.
  • Video tutorials and more.
Course Structure
  • Participants gain access to a course delegate pack.
  • Participants attend an online class on Zoom.
  • Participants partake in activities that develop their knowledge and understanding while accessing a Train-the-Trainer session.
  • Participants are invited to a 1-hour follow-up session, where the class can reunite, share learning and ideas, reflect on course materials, ask questions, and more.

Cancellation Policy

Please check your diary before committing to any dates. We understand that your circumstances may require a change of training dates. If you need to cancel or defer your order:

  • Up to 48 hours before the course begins: your order will be refunded, subject to a £15 administration fee. Alternatively, you can defer your order to the next occurrence of the same course.
  • Within 48 hours of the course beginning, including non-attendance: your order is non-refundable and cannot be deferred.

Please note that all courses operate with a minimum number of delegates. If this number is not obtained, we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule the event date. Your event facilitator will contact you to discuss options. In such cases where we cannot fulfil your order, a full refund will be given. You can contact the facilitator of your event, or victoria@befriending.co.uk to discuss your booking.
